As there is so much of both Historical and Natural
beauty to see in Northern Cyprus, Car Hire is highly recommended
and good value for money. We will be pleased to assist you with
driving routes, car parking information, etc. You will be supplied
with a 24 hour emergency contact number for North Cyprus rent a
car where there is always an English speaking person available.
A UK or International Driving Licence held for a minimum of 3 years
is required. For North Cyprus car hire, all drivers must be 25 years
or over. The volume of traffic in Northern Cyprus is generally light
(compared to the UK) though near the towns we do suffer with congestion,
especially when everyone is making their way to school and work
in the mornings and then rushing to get home in the evening! Drivers
in TRNC tend not to use their indicators quite as consciously as
on the Continent, so be aware of the vehicle in front of you suddenly
disappearing off to the left or the right! Horns are quite merrily
used especially when overtaking. Cars are not obliged to stop at
pedestrian crossings in Northern Cyprus.
When you rent a car in Northern Cyprus, you
should be aware speed limits. The speed limits
in North Cyprus are displayed in KMs. A rough guide is:
- in towns and built up areas 40 km (25 mph)
- on the roads outside 65 km (40 mph).
The Police do patrol these restrictions in Northern Cyprus and it
is fairly common to find groups of them on the sides of the road
‘armed' with radar guns. WATCH YOUR SPEED.
North Cyprus has also started to install speed cameras. You have
been warned! Drinking and Driving
restrictions are strict. Do not drink and drive in North Cyprus.
If an approaching car flashes its lights, it is actually a warning, e.g. maybe you are waiting to turn off the road and the car flashes, it DOES NOT mean proceed as in the UK , it means “WAIT! I am coming through and am not going to stop.
Variable road conditions and drivers attitudes make
moped riding very dangerous. We do not recommend moped riding in
Northern Cyprus, even for experienced riders.
When you want to park your rental car when visiting
the historical sites in North Cyprus, it is easy to do. We recommend
you look out for a car park when visiting the North Cyprus towns.
If an area is restricted then a NO PARKING sign will be shown. Sometimes
it is a ‘P' in a circle with a line through. Parking is also restricted
where you see Black & White or Yellow & White lines painted
on the kerb; these are equal to double yellow lines.
Petrol Stations are generally open from 8.00 am – 10.00 pm in
Northern Cyprus. Only a few stations remain open on Sundays. Always
fill up your rental car before you start on a long journey in North
Cyprus! You will find petrol stations on the road out of Kyrenia
to Nicosia. There are also some on the main road from Famagusta
to Güzelyurt. Check if your rental car runs on leaded or unleaded
fuel. Unleaded fuel is not stocked at the smaller garages.
ALWAYS USE YOUR SEATBELT.
