THE NATURE OF NORTH CYPRUS
FLORA
There
are around 1,800 different species of wild flowers on the island,
many of which are exclusive to Northern Cyprus. The best time to
see the wild flowers is between late Autumn and early Spring, when
the mountains and plains are filled with a mass of colour from the
many varied flowers and plants such as; Crocuses, Anenomes, Narcissus,
Giant Fennel and Orchids to mention but a few. The Herbarium in
Alevkaya, opened in 1989 by Deryck Viney, has a superb collection
of pressed and preserved plants, with over 800 different specimens.
The Herbarium is set in beautiful forest surroundings and is a lovely
place to stop for a picnic whilst driving through the Besparmak
range.
ORNITHOLOGY
There are around 342 species of birds passing through Cyprus as
they migrate in spring and autumn between Europe and the Nile Delta.
Birds of prey, which are rarer today because of hunting and contamination,
include the Kestrel, Eleanoras Falcon, Griffin Vulture, Peregrine and Bonelli’s
Eagle.
There are also seven endemic species which are the Cyprus Warbler,
Pied Wheatear, Scops Owl, Coal Tit, Short-toed Treecreeper, Jay
and Crossbill. Geçitköy Reservoir on the main Kyrenia
– Güzelyurt road is one of the most important bird watching
sites. Another popular area for bird watching is the Karpaz peninsula,
especially during spring and early summer. Our office has an information
pack, or contact KUSKOR – North Cyprus Society for the protection
of Birds and Nature on 8157337.
Please be aware that whilst Geçitköy reservoir is easy
to get to, if it has been raining the road soon turns to mud. We
recommend parking up and walking down, especially if you have a
saloon type car.
WATER
Most tap water in the Kyrenia region is quite safe to drink unless
stipulated otherwise. It has a relatively high mineral content so
some people do prefer to take the bottled variety. PLEASE DO NOT
WASTE OUR PRECIOUS WATER. During the summer season many hotels have
to buy in extra water. This water is from wells and it is not advisable
to drink. If you are in any doubt please check with your hotel reception.
It is NOT safe to drink the tap water in Famagusta.

Cyprus is a perfect blend of mountain and plain, and of hills
that slope to deserted bays half-screened by olive trees.”
